An online lunchtime session for the Business Architecture Forum, the community behind the Twin Cities Business Architecture Forum, where I spoke at the 10th annual summit in January.
Systems are not neutral: they either extract or regenerate, and architects sit closer to that choice than almost anyone else in an organisation. The session argued that sustainability is the floor rather than the ceiling, and that architects should now be aiming for regenerative systems that give back more than they take. It walked through the evolution of operating model contexts, from extractive through sustainable to regenerative, treated the circular economy as a reference architecture rather than a slogan, and looked at technology as a double-edged sword. It then introduced the Regenerative Architecture Principles, twelve open principles developed with the Architect Tomorrow community and published under Creative Commons, along with pragmatic language for raising these concerns with executives.
