Leveraging Open Standards to Drive Sustainable IT in Financial Services

Open Source in Finance Forum New York 2024 (FINOS)

A 30-minute session at FINOS’s Open Source in Finance Forum in New York.

Financial services firms find it especially hard to measure and reduce their technology carbon footprint because of the scale and complexity of their IT estates. The session gave an overview of the challenges and of existing standards and resources, such as the Green Software Foundation’s SCI and CNCF’s Kepler, including the problems of trust and comparability. It then showed how the Technology Carbon Standard, an open source framework inspired by the GHG Protocol, gives firms a standard way to classify, analyse and benchmark tech-related emissions, find carbon-intensive areas, prioritise reductions and line up with regulatory expectations.
